He was born in Cape Town 1959, South Africa. He studied Commercial Art Diploma 1978-1981
I.C.S. – C.T. Under the guidance and teachings of his father, Gordon Munro, Paul
started painting and drawing from childhood. Paul’s love for nature was profoundly
evident in these early works, depicting the African landscape and wildlife. Whilst
he was a schoolboy, his paintings were displayed and sold by Art In Cape Town. 1977-1981
He served in the S.A. Police Force. During these political years, he was stationed
in Johannesburg and Cape Town and studied Commercial Art by Correspondence.
1981-1983 He started painting fulltime.
He was nou loaded with a hatchback, two-man tent and art material as he wondered
through South Africa. He spends periods completely isolated from civilization, comparing
the rhythmic forms of the local landscapes. Here he developed his close emotional
accord with nature and the skill needed to express these emotions. In his own words
“to paint a mountain you first have to climb it”. This adherence to factual truthfulness
is a fruit Paul has treasured throughout his career.
1984- He had a one man exhibition-Picasso Gallery, Bellville
1985- He had an Exhibition in Summerset West Library Hall, Summerset West 1986- He
had another exhibition in the Picasso Gallery, Bellville
1987- He had an exhibition at the Cape Gallery, Cape Town. 1988- He had an exhibition
at Parow
1993- He had an exhibition in Washington DC, USA
1995- Paul Munro had an exhibition in his own gallery, East London Public Collection
and Commissions include Cape Town, Parow and East London;
parliamentary members and various Ambassadorial Embassies, S.A. Police Reaction Headquarters,
Cape Town.
1987-1988 His works were selected from artists in Cape Town as presentational gifts
from the City of Cape Town. Paul is now residing in East London where he is prolifically
painting landscapes, seascapes and figures. Paul is an active sportsman involved
in kickboxing( holder of Springbok colours and black belt), karate and hiking.
